Common name: Leafy burr-daisy.

Description:
Perennial herb 10-40 cm high; stems erect, branched, strigosehirsute, becoming woody at the base only; radical leaves petiolate, oblanceolate, 3-7 cm long, 7-18 mm wide, coarsely serrate; cauline leaves sessile, oblanceolate to cuneate, 2-6 cm long, 2-12 mm wide, acute, entire to shallowly dentate, subamplexicaul at the base, strigose to scabrous.

Capitula in loose leafy terminal cymes of 4-30, c. 1.5 cm diam.; receptacle conical, c. 1.5 mm diam., with acute scales; involucral bracts 15-18, linear, acuminate, 2.5-3.7 mm long, pubescent; ray florets 10-21, 2- or 3-seriate; ligules oblong, c. 4.5 mm long, yellow.

Achenes c. 2 mm long, smooth, glabrous, wingless but with prominent marginal ridges; pappus of 6-10 awns, rigid, laterally spreading or twisted, unequal, 1-3 mm long, distally barbed; apex of fruit projecting as an obtuse hairy cone between the awns; disk florets sterile.
