Description:
Annual or perennial erect glabrous herbs; leaf blade flat; ligule long, scarious.

Inflorescence a panicle or raceme; pedicels slender; spikelets ovoid, compressed laterally, with several spreading closely imbricate lemmas, hanging in a loose panicle; glumes 2, almost equal, boat-shaped, 7-9-nerved, persistent; lemmas membranous, concave, obtuse, several-nerved; palea much smaller.

Distribution:  About 20 species from the northern temperate areas and South America.
