Citation: R. Br., Prod. Fl. Nov. Holl. 538 (1810).

Derivation: Greek astron, star; loma, fringe; alluding to the tufts of hair inside the corolla tube.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Description:
Low much-branched shrubs; branchlets brown to grey-brown, scabrous to pubescent; stems grey or brown; leaves often discolorous, paler or glaucous below, acute-acuminate with an aristate tip, sessile or shortly petiolate.

Flowers axillary, solitary or 2 or 3 on short peduncles clothed with bracts; bracts grading in size to bracteoles, both usually broadly ovate to orbicular, with ciliolate margins; corolla tube elongated, with 5 tufts of hair or hairy scales inside below the middle; lobes valvate in bud, shorter than the tube, erect at the base, enclosing the anthers, spreading above, usually bearded inside; filaments short, flat, inserted in the throat, anthers oblong or linear, attached above the middle or near the top; ovary 5-celled, with 1 ovule per cell; style slender, equal to or longer than the corolla tube; stigma capitate; nectary annular, upper margin entire or toothed, glabrous.

Fruit a drupe with a dry or slightly pulpy mesocarp and a hard bony endocarp.

Distribution:  18 species, endemic to Australia.
