Derivation: After Johannes Ammann, 1707-41, Swiss botanist, Fellow of the Royal Society of London and Professor of botany at St Petersburg.

Description:
Erect glabrous annual herbs; stems and branches square in section; leaves opposite, cordate-auriculate at the base.

Flowers pedicellate, in short axillary cymes; floral tube short, campanulate or hemispherical in flower but becoming globular in fruit, with 8 faint vertical lines; sepals 4, minute; epicalyx 0; petals 4 or 0, up to 0.5 mm long; stamens 4; ovary sessile, incompletely 1-5-celled.

Capsule globose or ellipsoid, hyaline, dehiscing irregularly; seeds minute.

Distribution:  About 30 species; almost cosmopolitan.
