Derivation: Greek aiskhynomene, modest, ashamed; the name given by Pliny to some plant with sensitive leaves.

Description:
Herbs or undershrubs; leaves imparipinnate with many pairs of leaflets; stipules free, deciduous; stipels absent.

Racemes terminal on short lateral shoots; bracts stipule-like; bracteoles present; calyx deeply 2-lipped; stamens united by their filaments in 2 bundles of. 5 stamens each, slit open on the keel side basally and standard side above; ovules usually several; stigma terminal.

Pod stipitate, lomentaceous, splitting transversely into indehiscent 1-seeded articles; seed exarillate.

Distribution:  More than 250 species, pantropic; 2 native to northern Australia.
