Description:
Perennials, with a bushy habit; plants dioecious; leaf blades flat; ligule of hairs.
Inflorescence of heads of spikelets; male spikelets sessile or subsessile in small dense clusters with 1-3 outer ovate acuminate bracts scarcely exceeding the spikelets; the 2 glumes much shorter than the 2 lemmas which each have a palea and male floret; female spikelets in a similar head but with outer bracts which become hardened and variously shaped in the fruit.
