Ulvaria oxysperma (Kützing) Bliding 1968: 585, figs 31–34.

Phylum Chlorophyta – Order Ulvales – Family Ulvaceae

Selected citations: Kapraun & Flynn 1973: 148, figs 15–17. Womersley 1971a, 113, fig. I.

Synonym

Monostroma oxysperma (Kützing) Doty 1947: 12. Kornmann 1964: 17.

Thallus (Fig. 42B) light to medium green, delicate but fairly firm, somewhat shiny when partly dried, 2–8 (–12) cm high and usually as much across, irregularly foliose, often with ruffled marginal parts but usually without lobes, usually epilithic, attached by rhizoids from the basal cells (Fig. 43D); thallus 10–15 (–20) µm thick. Cells (Fig. 43C) of the expanded blade irregularly polygonal to rounded, 7–15 µm across with gelatinous walls, mostly irregularly arranged but sometimes in groups or in rows; chloroplast filling most of the cell, with 1 (–2) prominent pyrenoids.

Reproduction: Reproduction (Bliding 1968, p. 587) by biflagellate zoospores only, formed in marginal cells of the thallus.

Type from the Baltic Sea; in L (938, 53...82a).

Selected specimens: Kellidie Bay, Coffin Bay, S. Aust., mid eulittoral ( Womersley, 22.viii.1967; ADU, A31874-"Marine Algae of southern Australia" No. 1 b). Proper Bay, Port Lincoln, S. Aust., mid eulittoral (Womersley, 21.viii.1967; ADU, A31812-"Marine Algae of southern Australia No. la). Noonameena, Coorong, S. Aust. (Robertson, 27.viii.1976; ADU, A47260) Crawfish Rock, Westernport Bay, Vic., mid eulittoral ( Womersley, 29.viii.1971; ADU, A39439). Louisville, Tas., on Heterozostera (Olsen, 6.ix.1967; ADU, A31965).

Distribution map based
on current data relating to
specimens held in the
State Herbarium of SA

Distribution: Widely distributed on temperate coasts within the mid to upper eulittoral, usually under sheltered conditions, and often where salinity varies considerably.

Taxonomic notes: In southern Australia, from Coffin Bay, S. Aust. to Crawfish Rock, Westernport Bay, Vic., Botany Bay, N.S.W. and south-east Tasmania, usually mid eulittoral, in sheltered localities.

Bliding (1968, pp. 585, 590) recognizes three varieties of U. oxysperma but the differences between them appear slight.

In southern Australia, U. oxysperma is found mainly during winter (April to October) in mid eulittoral habitats.
