Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 345 (1753).

Derivation: The diminutive of tropaeum, the Roman name for a token of victory consisting of shields and helmets hung on a tree-trunk; the peltate leaves resembling the shields and the flowers the blood-stained helmets.

Description:
Scrambling (or in horticultural species climbing) herbs, usually glabrous; leaves peltate, with radiating main veins, usually more or less entire.

Petals brightly coloured usually red, yellow and orange.

Distribution:  About 90 species from Mexico to temperate South America.
