Tricostularia pauciflora

Common name: Needle bog-rush.
Description:
Tufted perennial; stems 10-30 cm long, mostly curved, very slender, rigid, subterete; leaves few, basal and usually also 1 higher up the stem, short and subulate, sometimes reduced to points.
Spikelets 2 or 3 in a short spike with short nearly glume-like bracts, brown, ovoid, c. 4 mm long, 2-flowered, the lower flower barren; glumes broad, acutely acuminate, 2 outer ones empty; hypogynous scales or bristles 6, very short, slightly dilated at the base.
Nut ellipsoid or somewhat obovoid-pyriform, acute, constricted below to a wide stipe, 2-2.5 x 1.3-1.5 mm, narrowly 3-ribbed, light-grey-green, somewhat pubescent especially at the top.

Probably common and widespread in open forests and grasslands throughout the southern Mt Lofty Ranges before settlement but now much reduced.

Biology:
Morphologically approaches C. reticulata, but in colour and general appearance resembles some forms of C. patersonii.
