Derivation: Derivation unknown, possibly alluding to Tordylium, another genus of Umbelliferae, or perhaps from the Greek torein, to pierce through, because of the prickles of the fruit.

Description:
Hispid or pubescent annuals, rarely biennial; tap-roots slender; stem erect or decumbent, branched; leaves petiolate, 1-3-pinnate; petioles sheathing; umbels compound, often more or less capitate, sessile or pedunculate, axillary or terminal.
Involucral bracts few or absent; rays 6-12, spreading-ascending or absent; bracteoles of involucel several, linear or filiform; pedicels spreading, short or absent; sepals small, lanceolate, or absent; petals white or pink, obovate, with a narrower inflexed apex; stylopodium thick-conical; styles short.
Fruit linear, oblong or ovoid, slightly laterally compressed, narrowed at the commissure, tuberculate or prickly; carpophore 2-fid at the apex or divided up to half its length; ribs of mericarps filiform, ciliate; furrows usually covered with numerous glochidiate prickles or tubercles; vittae solitary under the secondary ribs and 2 at the commissure.
