Derivation: Etymology unknown; perhaps from the Greek tolype a clew or ball of wool; from the appearance of the fruiting capitula.

Description:
Annual herb with vestiture of very short non-glandular hairs; leaves basal and cauline, alternate, flat, sessile.
Capitula terminal, pedunculate in loose panicles, homogamous; involucre c. 3-seriate; bracts subequal, herbaceous, the outer ones subulate, upcurved and loosely spreading; receptacle flat, naked, pitted; florets all bisexual, fertile, ligulate; ligules broadly linear; corolla tube cylindrical, pubescent; anthers sagittate at the base, with minute apical appendages; style branches linear, subterete, obtuse, finely papillose.
Outermost achenes unequally 4-angled, ribbed, shortly pubescent, each clasped by an inner involucral bract; pappus uniseriate, of minute tooth-like bristles; inner achenes more compressed, ribbed, glabrous; pappus uniseriate, with minute bristles and 2-5 longer ones.
