Description:
Prostrate and papillose or slightly hairy, probably always annual; leaves thick, gradually petiolate, elliptic, rhombic-elliptic, ovate or lanceolate, 1.5-5 cm long.

Flowers sessile or subsessile, 1 or 2 in the axils of leaves, papillose; perianth lobes 4, with 4 alternate stamens; styles and cells 3-6; ovary when in flower with as many angles at the summit as cells, the angles extending upwards in fruit into obtuse hard teeth, not as long as the perianth lobes within which they stand erect.

Fruit usually compressed, 3-8 mm diam., including the 2 obtuse hard lateral vertical wings, with 2 narrower wings at right angles to the lateral ones and usually 4 intermediate ribs.

Distribution:  S.Aust.: NW, LE, NU, GT, FR, EA, EP, NL, MU, YP.   W.Aust.; N.T.; N.S.W.; Vic. Conservation status: native Flowering time: throughout the year.

Taxonomic notes: This species is rather variable and is not always easily distinguishable from small-fruited specimens of T. tetragonioides. It sometimes has black fruits with large wings making it difficult to separate from the earlier described T. diptera with which it may even be conspecific. Some of the specimens identified as T. expansa by J. Black refer to this species.
