Description:
Stems to 1 m high; nodes glabrous; sheaths hirsute (but the upper sheaths puberulent or glabrous); ligule obtuse to obliquely truncate, 0.8-1 mm long (to 4 mm long if continuous with the sheath margin); auricles hirsute; blades to 30 cm long, 0.5-1.5 mm diam. (rolled), to 3 mm wide if expanded, scabrous to hirsute.

Panicle to 35 cm long, usually sparse, spreading, to 5 cm wide (excluding the awns); glumes gaping, acuminate; lower glume 13-20 mm long; upper glume 12-18 mm long; floret narrow-cylindrical, 7-8 mm long (excluding the awn); lemma black-brown, granular (tuberculate at the apex), with sparse erect white hairs, sparser at the apex; coma absent or obscure, to 1.5 mm long; callus 2.1-3.1 mm long, straight, sharp; awn 70-85 (rarely to 120) mm long, falcate; column 11-16 (rarely to 20) mm long, pubescent or villous.
