Synonymy: S. setacea R. Br. var. latiglumis J. Black, Trans. R. Soc. S. Aust. 46:565 (1922); S. brachystephana S.T. Blake, Proc. R. Soc. Qld 62:90, pl.6, (1952); Dichelachne setacea (R. Br.) Nees in Lehm., Pl. Preiss 2:98 (1846).

Common name: Corkscrew grass.

Description:
Stems delicate, to 0.8 m high; nodes glabrous; sheaths tightly rolled, glabrous or scaberulous; ligules obtuse, 2-9 mm long; auricles glabrous; blades to 30 cm long, 0.5-1.5 mm wide, glabrous or scabrous; panicle sparse, 10-20 cm long, contracted, 1.5-3 cm wide (excluding the awns); glumes gaping, acuminate, often erose; lower glume 9-15 mm long; upper glume 7-10 mm long; floret turbinate, gibbous, 5.5-7 mm long (excluding the awn); lemma involute, black, tuberculate, with appressed white hairs, sparser towards the apex; coma obscure, to 0.8 mm long; callus 1.7-2.5 mm long, straight, sharp; awn 2.5-4 cm long, twice bent; column 1-1.5 cm long, scabrous.

Flowering time: mainly Sept. — Nov.
