Description:
Stems to 1 m high; nodes pubescent; sheaths tightly rolled, glabrous or puberulent or scaberulous; ligule truncate, 1-1.5 mm long; auricles hirsute; blades to 30 cm long, 1-3 (rarely to 7) mm wide, glabrous or scabrous.
Panicle to 30 cm long, dense (occasionally sparser), contracted, 2-4 cm wide (excluding the awns); glumes gaping, acuminate; lower glume 18-25 (rarely to 27) mm long; upper glume 15-25 mm long; floret elliptic, 9-11.5 mm long (excluding the awn); lemma black, smooth to granular upwards, with appressed white hairs to the apex; callus 3-3.5 mm long, straight, sharp; awn 7-11 cm long, twice bent; column 3-4 cm long, pubescent to villous.
