Silene pratensis

Citation: Godron & Gren. in Gren. & Godron, Fl. Fr. 1:216 (1847).

Synonymy: Lychnis pratensis Rafn, Danm. Holst. Fl. 2:792 (1800); L. alba Miller, Gard. Dict. edn 8 (1768), nom. illegit.; S. alba (Miller)E.H. Krause in Sturm, Dtsch. Fl. edn 2, 5:989 (1901).

Common name: White campion, white cockle.

Description:
Perennial or annual, c. 80 cm high, often much-branched, covered with soft dense hair, somewhat glandular-hairy above; leaves ovate-lanceolate, sessile.

Flowers dioecious, in dichotomous cymes; calyx of male flowers 12-22 mm long, 10-nerved; calyx of female flowers c. 30 mm long, 20-nerved and swollen when the fruit is ripe; calyx teeth triangular; petals white, 2-fid; styles 5.

Capsules 10-15 mm long, ovoid, dehiscing by 10 teeth.
