Schinus areira

Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 389 (1753).

Synonymy: S. molle L., Sp. Pl. 388 (1753) var. areira (L.)DC., Prod. 2:74 (1825).

Common name: Pepper-tree.

Description:
An evergreen aromatic tree to 10 m or more high, with drooping branchtlets; leaves of 3-17 linear-lanceolate sessile leaflets; leaflets usually alternate, 2-5 cm long.

Flowers white, in long bracteate drooping panicles; sepals about half as long as the petals; petals c. 2 mm long; styles short.

drupe depressed-globular, red, c. 3 mm diam., with a papery outer layer when dry.

Distribution:  Commonly grown as an ornamental tree.

  N.T.; Qld; N.S.W.; Vic.   Native to South America to Mexico.

Conservation status: naturalised
