Sagittaria graminea

Citation: Michaux, Fl. Bor. Am. 2:396 (1803) subsp. platyphylla Engelm. in A. Gray, Man. Bot. N.U.S. edn 5:494 (1867).

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: Sagittaria.

Description:
Base perennial, with stolons, corm and/or rhizome; emergent leaves with a petiole to 55 cm long and blade linear to ovate, 10-25 cm long; submerged leaves strap-shaped or tapered-terete, to 50 cm long.

Inflorescence 5-120 cm long, erect or bending at about half its length, bearing 2-12 whorls of flowers; flowers white or pink.

Distribution:  Occurs in fresh water to 45 cm deep.

  Introduced into the eastern States.   Native to North America.

Conservation status: naturalised

Flowering time: have been sporadically recorded from Jan. — June.

Taxonomic notes: H. I. Aston (1973) stated that the variety in Australia is S. graminea var. weatherbiana (Fern.) Bogin, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 9:209 (1955) (S. weatherbiana Fern., Rhodora 37:387 (1935)). Here Sainty & Jacobs (1981) Waterplants of New South Wales is followed in regarding our form as subsp. platyphylla.
