Description:
Base perennial, with stolons, corm and/or rhizome; emergent leaves with a petiole to 55 cm long and blade linear to ovate, 10-25 cm long; submerged leaves strap-shaped or tapered-terete, to 50 cm long.
Inflorescence 5-120 cm long, erect or bending at about half its length, bearing 2-12 whorls of flowers; flowers white or pink.

Occurs in fresh water to 45 cm deep.
Introduced into the eastern States. Native to North America.

H. I. Aston (1973) stated that the variety in Australia is S. graminea var. weatherbiana (Fern.) Bogin, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 9:209 (1955) (S. weatherbiana Fern., Rhodora 37:387 (1935)). Here Sainty & Jacobs (1981) Waterplants of New South Wales is followed in regarding our form as subsp. platyphylla.
