Description:
Erect or decumbent herb to 40 cm tall, often with 2-5 simple stiff branches arising at some nodes; branches glabrous; leaves with slender 1-7 mm long petioles, blade narrow-linear to ovate, 1-4.5 x 0.4-1 cm; usually glabrous apart from sparse eglandular hairs on the margin; spikes 1-3 terminating each main branch; bracts lanceolate to ovate, 5-8.5 x 1.2-1.6 mm, the hyaline margin conspicuous, 0.35-0.5 mm wide at its broadest point half to three-quarters the way up from the base, lined with eglandular hairs, these sometimes on the midrib as well, the central green portion with dense more or less sessile glandular hairs; corolla 3.5-5.5 (rarely 6.5)mm long along the upper side, glabrous externally except for eglandular hairs on the middle lobe of the lower lip; style 2.2-3.8 mm long.

From grassland, alluvial flats, spinifex plains and from ridges. Often abundant after rain.

Biology:
This subspecies possesses a large-flowered variety (var. largiflorens) found in the Arnhem Land region of the N.T. and a small-flowered variety (var. clementii) which extends widely across northern Australia. This latter variety, described above, has only twice been collected in S.Aust.
