Psilocaulon tenue

Citation: Schwantes, Gartenflora 77:69 (1928).

Synonymy: Mesembryanthemum tenue Haw., Saxifrag. Enum. 2:175 (1821).

Common name: Wiry noon-flower, match-head plant.

Description:
Erect or decumbent small perennial shrub to c. 30 cm or more high; stems not papillose; leaves 5-15 mm long, usually withering early and caducous.

Flowers in cymes of 1-3 on short branches arranged to one side only towards the ends of main branches; perianth lobes 2-3 mm long, broadly ovate; petaloid staminodes slightly longer than perianth.

Capsules 2.5-3 mm across.

Distribution:    N.S.W. (south-western part); Vic. (north-western part).   Native to South Africa.

Conservation status: naturalised

Flowering time: Dec. (1 record), but fruits can be found throughout the year.

Taxonomic notes: The identity of this species requires checking. It has been confused with Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum from which it can be separated on its greater woodiness, lack of papillae, inflorescence type and broad perianth-segments.
