Description:
Trees and shrubs, pubescent or glabrous, occasionally spinescent; leaves alternate, linear to lanceolate or obovate, entire, petiolate.

Flowers terminal or axillary, solitary or in few- to many-flowered cymes; sepals free or rarely connate; petals linear or oblanceolate, free, connate at their base or part of their length to form a tube, apex spreading or recurved; stamens free.

Fruit 1-celled, ovoid or obovoid; valves 2-5, woody or coriaceous, remaining fused at base; seeds immersed in a resinous viscid fluid.

Distribution:  About 150 species in Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands; 11 species in Australia.
