Derivation: Greek pipto, to fall; ather, an awn; referring to the deciduous awn on the lemma.

Description:
Perennials.

Spikelets with 1 bisexual flower, paniculate; rhachilla articulated above the glumes; glumes membranous, longer than the lemma, becoming shiny in fruit; lemma hardened, cylindric-ovoid, with an almost straight deciduous awn less than 1 cm long; palea with 2 nerves; stamens 3.

Distribution:  25 species in the eastern Mediterranean and Eurasia.
