Description:
Tree to 20 m high; bark smooth and silvery-grey at first, becoming reddish-brown, fissured and scaly; winter buds c. 8 mm long, the scales fringed and often reflexed at the tips; leaves in pairs, 5-8 cm long, c. 1 mm diam., greyish-green.
Female cones 1-3 together, on thick scaly stalks, reddish, ovoid-conic, 5-11 cm long, more or less symmetrical.
