Description:
Aromatic shrub to 1.2 m high; stems woody, densely branched, with compact whitish tomentum, terete; leaves sessile, upcurved to patent, more or less evenly spaced along the branchlets, obovate to oblong, narrowed at the base, 1-3 mm long, to 1 mm wide, flat, green and subglabrous above, thinly tomentose and with the fine mid-vein visible below; margins entire, revolute.

Capitula solitary, sessile, terminal on lateral branchlets to form a loose leafy panicle; involucre cylindrical, 4-5 mm long; bracts 3-4-seriate, lanceolate, acute, glabrous or tomentose near the apex, pale-green below, purplish at the apex; ray florets 5-9; ligules narrowly oblong, 3-9 mm long, white; disk florets 4-8, pale-yellow.

Achenes terete, 1.5-2 mm long, striate, glabrous to sparsely pubescent; pappus bristles 25-40, uniseriate, equal, c. 3 mm long.

Distribution:  In mallee and heath communities.

Biology: O. brachyphylla as here defined is a variable entity with typical O. brachyphylla and O. exilifolia at one extreme (small leaves, short ligules and sparsely pubescent achenes) and the plants formerly known as O. pimeleoides var. minor at the other (larger leaves and ligules and completely glabrous achenes).
