Derivation: Greek neos, new; Bassia, a genus of the same family.

Description:
Small shrubs; leaves alternate, sessile, subterete.

Flowers bisexual, solitary in the leaf axil; perianth 5-lobed; stamens 5; fruiting perianth cylindrical, crustaceous to woody, with 5 spines arising from the base of the lobes.

Pericarp membranous; seed vertical; testa membranous; embryo U-shaped, with an erect radicle; perisperm central.

Distribution:  3 species endemic to Australia.
