Derivation: Greek mikros, small; anthos, flower.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Description:
Capsule 3- or 2-celled; seeds 2 or 1 by abortion in each cell; seed oblong, smooth, carunculate terminally; embryo linear, straight, the coltyledons twice as large as and not much broader than the radicle.

Flowers solitary, axillary or few together in upper axils; petals absent; calyx segments 6 or 4, the inner ones often larger; male flowers with 3 stamens opposite the outer calyx segments, or 6 stamens opposite to all the segments, rarely 9; anthers with 2 parallel cells, dehiscing longitudinally; rudimentary ovary small and lobed, glandular; female flowers with a 2-or 3-celled ovary, with 2 ovules in each cell; styles 2 or 3, undivided, stigmatic along the inner face.
