Derivation: Greek liparos, shining; karphos, chaff; alluding to the silvery glumes of some species.

Description:
Annual or perennial glabrous herbs; stems tufted, leafy only at the base.

Inflorescence capitate; spikelets numerous, forming dense spikes, sessile, with many bisexual spikelets; spikelets imbricate all round the rhachilla; style with 2 or 3 branches.

Nut enclosed in 2 hypogynous scales.

Distribution:  About 15 species from America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
