Description:
Low slender shrub to 40 cm high, branches dichotomous and spinescent, almost cylindrical, terete, striate, minutely sericeous or glabrescent, grey-silky; rhizome pale, somewhat corky; leaves at the base of the branches reduced to lanceolate bracts, c. 3 mm long, brown, scarious.

Flowers red, 30-40 mm long, on hairy pedicels 5-20 mm long in 1-sided many-flowered racemes on short thick basal scapes; scapes, pedicels and calyces golden-brown-sericeous; scape horizontal, 5-20 cm long; bracts narrow-ovate, 3-4 mm long, at the base of the pedicel, brown, leathery; bracteoles attached to the pedicel under the calyx, lanceolate, 2-3 mm long, brown, villous, often deciduous; calyx conical-cylindrical, 15-40 mm long, 2-lipped and cut almost to the base into 5 linear-lanceolate lobes, red and glabrous inside, 2 upper lobes connate to the tip, wider distally, incurved, falcate; petals all glabrous, crimson in their upper parts, pale and somewhat transparent towards the base; standard narrow-obovate to narrow-ovate, about two-thirds the length of the calyx, wings narrow-ovate, longer than the calyx; keel the longest, straight; ovary densely villous, with numerous ovules.

Pod beaked, c. 12 mm long, tomentose.
