Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 798 (1753).

Derivation: Greek leon, leontos, lion; odous, odontos, tooth; translation of the French dent-de-lion or lion's tooth, so called because of the deeply toothed leaves.

Description:
Biennial or perennial herb with a tap root; vestiture of forked non-glandular hairs; leaves all basal, dentate or pinnatifid, flat.

Achenes terete, ribbed, transversely muffcate, the outer ones beakless with a short scarious pappus, the inner ones shortly beaked with a pappus of bristles in 2 series.

Distribution:  About 50 species in Europe and western Asia.
