Citation: R. Br., Prod. Fl. Nov. Holl. 251 (1810).

Derivation: Greek hypo, below; laina, a cloak; alluding to the bracteoles and empty glumes at the base of the spikelets.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: None

Description:
Flowers dioecious; perianth-segments 6; male spikelets several-flowered, female 1-flowered; stamens 3; style branches 2 or 3; ovary 1-celled.

Fruit an indehiscent nut, sessile on a short thick stalk-like receptacle or carpophore.

Distribution:  2 species endemic in Australia but until recently also considered to occur in South Africa.
