Description:
Glabrous perennial, 10-50 cm high, with a creeping rootstock; blades flat, 1.5-8 mm broad, finally more finely striate than in G. australis and lacking transverse nerves; ligule becoming torn, c. 5 mm long.
Panicle narrow but loose, unilateral, 5-25 cm long, the distant slender solitary or twin branches bearing 1-6 spikelets; spikelets at first almost cylindrical, later broader and flattish, 13-25 mm long, 8-15-flowered; glumes thin, acute to subobtuse, the first 1.5-2.5 mm long, the second 2.5-4 mm long, both 1-nerved; lemmas prominently toothed with 3-5 obtuse or acute teeth, 3.5-4.5 mm long, 7-nerved, scabrid.
