Description:
Single-stemmed little- or much-branched tree to 30 m high or multi-stemmed and up to 4 m high; bark of long fibrous interlacing strands, grey-brown, present on the trunk and major branches, becoming ridged and furrowed on older trees, shedding to expose light-brown bark below; cotyledons reniform or broadly and shallowly emarginate; juvenile leaves opposite for 2 or 3 pairs and subsessile, oblong-elliptic to elliptic, rough from a few small tufts of hairs below; adult leaves alternate, on petioles 10-20 mm long, oblique, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, glossy, dark-green, 8-16 x 1-3 cm.
Flowers in pedunculate umbels of 4-16 in the axils of the leaves; buds on pedicels 2-5 mm long, clavate, smooth or rugose, 6-8 x 3-5 mm; operculum hemispherical or depressed-hemispherical, with a small point, much shorter than the hypanthium; flowers cream-coloured; anthers all fertile, reniform.
Fruit ovoid to pear-shaped, often slightly constricted at the orifice, 7-12 x 7-12 mm; valves small, deltoid, enclosed well below the flat narrow rim; seeds irregularly pyramidal or D-shaped, yellowish- or reddish-brown to almost black.
