Electronic Flora of South Australia Species Fact Sheet

Erythrocladia subintegra Rosenvinge 1909: 73, figs 13,14.

Phylum Rhodophyta – Class Bangiophyceae – Order Compsopogonales – Family Erythrotrichiaceae

Selected citations: Abbott & Hollenberg 1976: 284, fig. 227. Chapman 1969: 10, fig. 3A. Dawson 1953: 5. Levring 1953: 462. Nichols & Lissant 1967: 6, pls 1–6.

Synonyms

Erythropeltis subintegra (Rosenvinge) Kornmann & Sahling 1985: 224, fig. 8.

Sahlingia subintegra (Rosenvinge) Kornmann 1989: 227, figs 1,6–13.

Thallus (Fig. 1I) minute (usually 20–100 µm in diameter), forming more or less circular discs of radiating filaments usually closely adherent laterally, with a marginal row of single or often furcate apical cells, branching from the marginal cells (Fig. 1I), becoming 2–3 cells thick centrally; cells 4–8 µm in diameter and 6–10 (–25) µm long, rhodoplasts parietal, laminate, with a single pyrenoid.

Reproduction: Reproduction by monospores from sporangia cut off from central cells of the disc.

Type from Mollegrund, Denmark, on Polysiphonia urceolata, 11–15 m deep; syntype in C (see Dawson 1953, p. 5).

Selected specimens: Commercial Fishing Marina, Port Adelaide, S. Aust., on Chaetomorpha linum, 0–0.5 m deep on pontoons (Womersley, 22.iii.1988; AD, A58641). Port Noarlunga, S. Aust., on Caulerpa scalpelliformis, upper sublittoral near jetty (Womersley, 4.iv.1988; AD, A58643).

Distribution map based
on current data relating to
specimens held in the
State Herbarium of SA

Distribution: Cosmopolitan.

In southern Australia probably widespread but rarely preserved in herbaria. Levring (1953, p. 462) recorded it from Cottesloe, W. Aust. around southern Australia and Tasmania to Palm Beach, N.S.W.

Taxonomic notes: Views on the relationships of this species with the type are discussed above, under the genus.
