Ascending annual herb to 40 cm high; stems pubescent with arcuate retrorse simple hairs; leaves ovate to elliptic in outline, to 4 cm long, deeply pinnately lobed with 6 or rarely 4 lateral lobes; the lobes dentate; petiole to 7 cm long.
Flowers in umbels of 2-6; pedicels to 15 mm long, pubescent with white recurved simple hairs; sepals elliptic to narrow-oblong, to 9 mm long, pubescent with short simple white retrorse-appressed hairs; petals blue or rarely pinkish, slightly longer than the sepals; stamen filaments lanceolate, to 4 mm long; staminodes about half as long.
Mericarps to 7 mm long, covered with long spreading stiff hairs; awn to 7 cm long, with 2 pits at the base and 2 concentric folds beneath each pit.
Flowering time: June — Sept.
