Description:
Perennial herb or subshrub 10-40 cm high, polygamo-monoecious; stems erect, divaricately branched, glabrous, becoming woody near the base; leaves alternate, narrowly elliptical to lanceolate, broad-based acute or subacute, 1-8 cm long, 3-14 mm wide, serrate to irregularly dentate or the uppermost subentire, glabrous or slightly scabrous with minute crisped stiff hairs.
Capitula shortly pedunculate in rather dense terminal panicles, globular, c. 3 mm diam., more or less unisexual; involucre c. 3 mm long; bracts oblong or obovate, obtuse, glabrous; female head with numerous fertile female florets, sometimes with fewer sterile bisexual florets in the centre
Achenes cylindrical, 0.7-1 mm long, ribbed, glabrous; pappus absent; male head with fewer florets, mostly bisexual, sterile, tubular; corolla exceeding the involucre, white to pale-mauve; achenes abortive, smooth; pappus of 2-5 weak barbellate bristles, shorter than the corolla.
