Danthonia semiannularis

Citation: R. Br., Prod. Fl. Nov. Holl. 177 (1810).

Synonymy: Arundo semiannularis Labill., Nov. Holl. Pl. Sp. 1:26 (1804); Notodanthonia semiannularis (Labill.) Zotov, New Zealand J. Bot. 1:116 (1963); Rytidosperma semiannulare (Labill.) Connor & Edgar, New Zealand J. Bot. 17:332 (1979).

Description:
Erect tufted slender perennial, 20-45 cm high; ligule a dense ring of hairs, c. 0,5 mm long, collar hairs absent; leaves rather narrow, involute, glabrous, firm, rarely above 15 cm long.

Panicles much exserted, contracted. 5-8 cm long, spikelets greenish-purplish, c. 6-flowered; florets about three-quarters as long as the glumes, not very closely packed; glumes subequal, 5-7-nerved, 7-12 mm long, membranous margins firm and distinct: lemma lanceolate, 2-2.5 mm long (including the densely hairy c. 0.5 mm long callus), uniformly though sometimes sparsely hairy with short hairs (c. 0.5 mm) over the back and with a row of longer hairs (3-4 mm long) just below the sinus: lateral lobes 3.5-4 mm, narrow, thin, tapering into fine points, awns 1-1.5 mm; central awn brown and twisted for 2-3 mm at the base, then geniculate, c. 9 mm long, exceeding the lateral lobes by c. 6 mm; palea exceeding the sinus by c. 1.5 mm, c. 2.5-4.5 mm long, lanceolate to oblong, with a few scattered hairs on the back in the lower part or glabrous; anthers c. l mm long, yellow; grain c, 1.5 mm long.

Distribution:    N.S.W.; Vic.; Tas.   New Zealand (probably introduced).

Conservation status: native

Flowering time: Oct. — Dec.
