Derivation: Apparently the Latinised form of a Dutch or Flemish vernacular name.
Synonymy: Centaurea L. section Crupina Pers., Syn. Pl. 2:488 (1807). 3 species in the Mediterranean region and south-western Asia.

Description:
Slender annual herbs; stem erect, terete; leaves basal and cauline, alternate, dentate to pinnatisect, without spines.
Capitula terminal, solitary or in corymbs, heterogamous; involucres cylindrical to ovoid; bracts herbaceous with scarious margins, imbricate in several unequal series; receptacle with linear scales; outer florets tubular, sterile, without stamens or style; inner florets tubular, bisexual, fertile, 5-merous; anthers sagittate at the base with short acute apical appendages; style branches obtuse, diverging at the apex only, without sterile appendages.
Achene truncate at the apex, shortly tapered at the base, hardly compressed; pappus 2-seriate, the outer row of unequal barbellate bristles, the inner of short acute scales.
