Description:
Annual herb 7-35 cm high; stem erect, dichotomously branched, glabrous; basal leaves few, oblanceolate, obtuse, attenuate at the base, 5-15 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, lyrate, runcinately pinnatifid to pinnatipartite, glabrous; cauline leaves few, the lowest lanceolate, pinnatisect, amplexicaul with acute auricles, those above progressively reduced to filiform bracts c. 1 cm long.
Capitula several in a loose panicle; peduncles 3-12 cm long, slightly swollen towards the apex, subglabrous; involucres 8-10 mm long, 6-8 mm diam.; outer bracts subulate, subequal, to one-third the length of the inner ones, green; inner bracts whitish-tomentose, with a green mid-vein; receptacle sparsely hairy; florets 45-60; corolla pubescent; ligules oblong, 10-12 mm long.
Achenes fusiform, beakless, curved, irregularly ribbed, c. 4 mm long, glabrous, brown; pappus bristles 2-seriate, c. 4 mm long, hardly exceeding the involucre, caducous.

Taxonomic notes:
Babcock (1947) recognises 4 subspecies within native Greek populations of C. dioscoridis; the solitary S.Aust. specimen is closest to the widespread and variable subsp. dioscoridis.
