Description:
Decumbent or erect shrub to 1.3 m, open or dense, often with ferruginous tomentose branches; petioles, 1-4 mm long; lamina narrowly ovate to ovate, 1-2.5 x 0.5-1.5 cm, with entire to irregularly crenate margins, base rounded to cordate, glabrous to scabridulose on both surfaces.
Flowers pendulous, pedunculate, 1-3 (rarely to 5); terminal leaf pair as foliaceous bracts; calyx semi-orbicular, 3-6 mm long, more or less 4-dentate; corolla cylindrical to funnel-shaped, 1.5-3 cm long, red or orange with green tips; filaments of the stamens opposite the petals considerably broader than the filaments opposite the sepals; anthers enclosed or just exserted; ovary densely tomentose.
Fruit 6-9 mm long; seeds 3-5 x c. 2 mm, variable in colour, grey, brown, black or mottled grey-brown.

Biology:
Crushed leaves have a distinctive peppery smell.
Taxonomic notes:
Hybridisation with C. schlechtendalii is known in S.Aust. Hybrids are also known from N.S.W., Vic., Tas. and involve C. alba, C. aemula and C. glabra.
