Description:
Annual herbs, covered with stellate hairs.
Monoecious; male flowers subsessile in terminal spike-like racemes or in axillary fascicles; calyx with 5 lanceolate segements; petals 5, linear; stamens 5-10, on short columns, monadelphous, the anthers dehiscing longitudinally; rudimentary ovary absent; female flowers solitary at the base of the male; calyx with 10 segments; petals absent or very small; ovary 3-celled; each cell 1-ovulate; styles 3.
Capsule large, drooping, with 3 fruitlets; seed acarunculate; cotyledons broad, flat.
