Description:
Rigid annual 20-40 cm high; stems erect, loosely divaricate-branched, winged in the upper portion, pubescent; basal leaves lanceolate, dentate to lyrate-pinnatifid, to 12 cm long; cauline leaves lanceolate to narrowly oblong, decurrent, mucronate, dentate to entire, pubescent, sparsely cobwebby below.
Capitula solitary, 14-18 mm diam.; involucre ovoid, 15-20 mm long; bracts lanceolate, pale-green, the outer densely cobwebby to woolly, the inner glabrous; appendages with a straight patent terminal spine 14-20 mm long and 3 pairs of spinules 0.8-2.5 mm long pinnately arranged along the lower portion, purplish-brown; outer florets patent; corollas yellow, glandular.
Achenes 4-4.5 mm long, brownish-grey, smooth, shiny; pappus of unequal bristles, brown, 2-4 mm long.
