Description:
Densely tufted; stems tall, to 1 m or so high, acutely triquetrous, scabrous on the edges towards the summit; leaves 3-6 mm broad, with scabrous margins.
Inflorescence a long narrow spike-like panicle 5-25 cm long, with inconspicuous bracts or the lowest sometimes prominent and filiform; spikelets very numerous, androgynous, ovoid, c. 5 mm long; glumes more or less hyaline, acute or subacute, shortly mucronate, the sides stained chestnut.
Utricles ovate and tapering into a shortly 2-fid beak, plano- or somewhat biconvex, compressed, glabrous, serrulate on the margins in the upper part, 2-3 mm long and slightly longer than the glumes; style branches 2.
