Caladenia carnea var. minor

Citation: Hatch, Trans. R. Soc. N.Z. 75:368 (1945).

Synonymy: C. minor Hook. f., Fl. Nov. Zel. 1:247 (1853); C. catenata (Smith) Druce var. minor (Hook. f.) W.M. Curtis, Stud. Fl. Tas. 4A:106 (1980).

Description:
Plant slender, 10-25 cm high; leaf very long for the size of the plant.

Flowers 1 or 2, seldom or briefly opening; perianth-segments 5-7 mm long, 2-4 mm wide, incurved, white (rarely pink) inside, green or green and brown outside; labellum c. 5 mm long, barred with red, calli yellow, in 2 rows; column 5-6 mm long, barred red.

Distribution:  Occurs singly or in small groups in sand or gravelly soils among fallen bark and leaf litter under trees in well forested areas. Locally common.

  N.S.W.; Vic.; Tas.   New Zealand.

Flowering time: Sept. — Nov.

Biology: In S.Aust. the flowers open only briefly and are presumably self-pollinated. Var. minor in the strict sense may prove to be confined to New Zealand.
