Citation: Cav., Icon. 4:30 (1797).

Derivation: From Latin bursa, a pouch; alluding to the fruit.

Synonymy: Itea Andrews, Bot. Rep. 5:t. 314 (1803); Cyrilla Sprengel, Novi Prov. Hort. Acad. Hal. Berol. 15 (1819).

Common name: Bursarias, South Australian Christmas bushes.

Description:
Small trees to low shrubs; branches and branchlets often spinescent; leaves alternate or clustered, linear to lanceolate, entire.

Flowers solitary, clustered, racemose or paniculate; sepals free, deciduous or persistent; petals narrowly oblong, spreading from the base; stamens free, ovoid, dehiscing by longitudinal slits; ovary shortly stipitate, ellipsoid, glabrous or pubescent, incompletely 2-celled, placentation parietal; ovules numerous.

Capsules shortly stipitate, flat, broad-orbicular; seeds numerous, reniform, flat.

Distribution:  Endemic to Australia, 6 species.
