Description:
Perennial herbs with tuberous rootstocks; leaves net-veined, petioles sheathing at the base.
Inflorescence a dense-flowered simple spadix supported at its base by a leaf-like or coloured bract the spathe, the upper part of the spadix without flowers; flowers all unisexual, in the lower part female with only the lowest fertile, in the upper part male of which the upper are sterile; perianth absent; ovary 1-celled, stigmas sessile.
