Description:
Spreading perennial herb to 35 cm high; stems prostrate to ascending, branched, becoming slightly woody at the base, densely white-tomentose; leaves cauline, sessile, oblanceolate, the lower ones often lyrate-pinnatipartire, 4-10 cm long, 5-30 mm wide, concolorous, greyish, tomentose; margins irregularly dentate.
Capitula 5-7 cm diam., solitary, terminal on erect unbranched peduncles with few reduced leaves; involucre hemispherical, c. 1.5 cm long; bracts c. 5-seriate, lower ones with spreading linear points; upper ones longer with obtuse scarious apices; ray florets 15-20; ligules oblong, 3-toothed at the apex, 2.5-3 cm long, white above, mauve below, with a dark band at the base; disk florets numerous, purple-black.
Achenes densely sericeous, 3-4 mm long, 5-ridged, 2 ridges longer and incurved, giving the appearance of a 3-celled fruit; pappus scales 7 or 8, oblong, 3-4 mm long, pinkish.
