Description:
Procumbent perennial herbs with tuberous roots.
Flowering stems ascending, leafy towards the base, to 20 cm long; leaves opposite to alternate, often imbricate, sessile, succulent, entire, acute, glabrous; with fascicles of hairs in the leaf axils; inflorescence a few-flowered cyme; bracts opposite, scarious in the upper part, herbaceous to fleshy towards the base; sepals deciduous; petals 5, free; stamens 8-10; ovary superior, ovoid to globose, ovules numerous; stigmas 3, on a style of about the same length as the stigmatic arms.
Capsule 3-valved, light- to red-brown, the epicarp caducous, the endocarp membranous and persistent, the endocarp valves surrounded by and alternate with hardened white bristle-like remains of the mesocarp; seeds numerous.
