Derivation: Greek alyxis, an escape; thought to indicate the remote areas in which it was found.

Common name: None

Description:
Erect compact glabrous woody shrub, often branching dichotomously; leaves shortly petiolate, opposite.

Flowers subsessile or shortly pedicellate, in axillary or terminal cymes; corolla lobes spreading above a narrow tube.

Drupes usually 1 or 2 per cyme.

Distribution:  About 80 species from Madagascar to Indomalesia and 9 in Australia.
