Description:
Dioecious shrub 60 cm to 2 m high; articles terete, smooth, striate, 7-13 mm long, 0.9-1.2 mm diam.; phyllichnia broadly angular; teeth 6-8, reddish-brown, at least somewhat spreading and often ultimately withering, overlapping at their bases, 0.8-1.5 mm long.
Male spikes 1-3 cm long, dense, 8-10 whorls per cm; bracteoles persistent; anthers red-brown, 0.9-1.3 mm long; cone sessile or on a short peduncle to c. 2 mm long, subcylindrical, 1.2-2.3 cm long, 13-17 mm diam.
Fruiting bracteoles broadly acute to obtuse, with a thick (broadly acute when dry) dorsal protuberance nearly as long as the bracteole.

Biology:
Some of the Victorian forms have much more slender branchlets than are found in S.Aust. In the past, this species has been mistakenly included in C. paludosa var. robusta (see also under A. robusta).
