Albizia lophantha

Citation: Benth., London J. Bot. 3:86 (1844).

Synonymy: Acacia lophantha Willd., Sp. Pl. 4:1070 (1806); Mimosa distachya Vent., Descr. Pl. Nouv. t. 20 (1800/01), non Cav. (1795/ 96); Albizia distachya (Vent.)Macbr., Contr. Gray Herb. 59:3 (1919).

Common name: Cape Leeuwin waffle, crested (or Cape) wattle.

Description:
Small tree to 6 m high, with downy branches; leaves bipinnate, to 20 cm long; pinnae in 6-12 pairs; pinnules in 20-40 pairs, linear-oblong, 8-12 mm long, 1.5-4 mm broad, with the principal vein near the upper edge.

Flowers pedicellate, in dense cylindrical greenish-yellow axillary spikes, 4-8 cm long, 1-3 spikes in each axil; calyx shortly 5-lobed; corolla 3 times as long as the calyx; stamens long, protruding.

Legumes flat, linear-oblong, 7-11 cm long, 8-20 mm broad; seeds transverse, blackish, 8-11 in each pod; funicle short, slender, red.

Distribution:    endemic to W.Aust.; naturalised also in N.S.W.; Vic.; Tas.

Conservation status: naturalised
